Practical Advice

The journey through loss is one of the most challenging experiences life presents. During this time, the support of a compassionate, professional, and understanding funeral service is not merely a convenience but a cornerstone of healing. Ridgeway Funeral Service stands ready to be that cornerstone for you and your family.

Practical Advice for Navigating Loss

Losing a loved one is an inherently painful and disorienting experience. Amidst the profound grief, families are often faced with a myriad of practical and legal requirements that can feel overwhelming. During such a sensitive time, the guidance of an experienced and compassionate funeral service provider is invaluable. Ridgeway Funeral Service understands the delicate balance between honouring a life lived and managing the necessary arrangements. This article offers practical guidance on the steps to take when a death occurs, highlighting how Ridgeway Funeral Service serves as a pillar of support throughout this challenging journey.

What To Do When A Death Occurs

The immediate aftermath of a death can be confusing, with different protocols depending on where the death occurred. Knowing the initial steps can help bring a sense of order to a chaotic situation. Ridgeway Funeral Service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to provide guidance as soon as you need it.
Death at Home (Expected)
If the death was expected and the person was under the care of a doctor, contact their General Practitioner (GP) or the out-of-hours doctor. They will attend to confirm the death and issue a Medical Certificate of Cause of Death (MCCD). Once the doctor has confirmed the death, you can then contact Ridgeway Funeral Service. We can arrange for the deceased to be brought into our care at a time that suits your family, offering a respectful and gentle transfer.
Death at Home (Unexpected or Sudden)
In cases of sudden, unexpected, or unexplained death at home, you must contact emergency services (999). The police will attend and contact the Coroner. The Coroner's office will investigate the circumstances, which may involve a post-mortem examination. Once the Coroner has released the deceased, you can then arrange for Ridgeway Funeral Service to take them into our care. We can liaise directly with the Coroner's office on your behalf, easing this burden.
Death in Hospital, Hospice, or Care Home
If the death occurs in one of these institutions, the staff will guide you through the initial procedures. They will arrange for the MCCD to be issued and advise you when the deceased can be released into the care of your chosen funeral director. You simply need to inform the staff that you wish Ridgeway Funeral Service to handle the arrangements, and we will coordinate directly with the institution.
Upon Notification of Death

Once the death has been confirmed, and irrespective of where it occurred, contacting Ridgeway Funeral Service is one of your first crucial steps. We can immediately begin to offer support and practical advice, including:

  • Guidance on legal requirements and necessary documentation.
  • Arranging the dignified transfer of the deceased into our private chapel of rest.
  • Beginning discussions about your wishes for the funeral, without any pressure, allowing you to take time to consider options.
  • Providing a comforting presence and a compassionate point of contact during this difficult time.

Registering A Death

Registering a death is a legal requirement in the UK, and it must be done within a specific timeframe. This process formally records the death and allows you to obtain the necessary documents for the funeral and for managing the deceased's estate.

Who Can Register the Death?

The death needs to be registered by a 'qualified informant,' which is typically:

  • A close relative of the deceased (e.g., spouse, civil partner, parent, child).
  • Someone present at the death.
  • The occupier of the house or institution where the death occurred (if no relative is present).
  • The person arranging the funeral (though usually a relative is preferred).
Where and When to Register
  • Where: The death must be registered at the Register Office in the district where the death occurred. You can find your local Register Office online, or Ridgeway Funeral Service can provide you with the necessary contact details. Due to current guidelines, many register offices now offer telephone appointments.
  • When: You must register the death within 5 days (unless the Coroner is involved, in which case the timeframe may be extended).
Documents You Will Need to Take to the Registrar

To register the death, you will need to provide specific documents and information. Gathering these beforehand will make the process smoother:

  • The Medical Certificate of Cause of Death (MCCD): This is the most crucial document, issued by the doctor who attended the deceased.
  • Information about the Deceased:
    • Full name and surname (and maiden name, if applicable).
    • Date and place of birth.
    • Last occupation.
    • Usual address.
    • If married or in a civil partnership, the full name and occupation of their spouse/civil partner.
    • NHS number (if known).
  • Your Information (as the informant):
    • Your full name and address.
    • Your relationship to the deceased.
Documents You Will Receive from the Registrar

Once the death is registered, the Registrar will issue you with important documents:

  • The 'Green Form' (Certificate for Burial or Cremation): This allows Ridgeway Funeral Service to proceed with either the burial or cremation. We will require this document from you.
  • A Certificate of Registration of Death (Form BD8): This form is for DWP (Department for Work and Pensions) purposes and provides information about bereavement benefits.
  • Certified Copies of the Death Certificate: You will need multiple copies of the death certificate for various administrative purposes, such as closing bank accounts, claiming insurance benefits, and managing pensions. It is advisable to purchase multiple copies at the time of registration, as they are cheaper then and save significant time later.

Ridgeway Funeral Service can offer comprehensive advice on the registration process and ensure you have all the necessary paperwork ready, bridging the gap between initial shock and practical necessities.

Arranging The Funeral

Once the death is registered and the green form is obtained, the focus shifts to arranging a funeral that truly reflects the life and wishes of the deceased and their family. This is where the compassionate expertise of Ridgeway Funeral Service becomes paramount, guiding you through every decision with sensitivity and care.

Key Decisions and Considerations for Arranging the Funeral:

The process of arranging a funeral involves numerous choices, and Ridgeway Funeral Service will walk you through each one, providing options and support without pressure.

Burial or Cremation:
  • Burial: This involves choosing a burial plot in a cemetery or churchyard. Considerations include whether it’s a new plot or reopening an existing family grave.
  • Cremation: This involves arrangements with a crematorium. Families then decide on the disposition of ashes (e.g., scattering, interment, keeping them in an urn).
  • Ridgeway Funeral Service will explain the full process for both options, including associated legal forms and fees.
Type of Service
  • Religious Service: Held in a church, other place of worship, or a crematorium chapel, led by a minister, priest, or cleric.
  • Non-Religious/Humanist Service: Led by a celebrant, focusing on the deceased’s life, values, and memories, often held in a crematorium chapel, dignified secular venue, or even at the graveside.
  • Direct Cremation/Burial: A very simple service without a traditional ceremony or attendance by mourners, followed by a private committal. This is often chosen for simplicity or cost-efficiency.
  • Personalised Service: We can incorporate elements from different traditions or unique ideas to create a truly bespoke service.
Venue and Timing
  • Selecting the appropriate church, crematorium chapel, or alternative venue.
  • Deciding on the date and time that best suits the family and other attendees.
Coffin/Casket Selection
  • Ridgeway Funeral Service offers a range of coffins and caskets, from traditional wood to eco-friendly options, varying in material, design, and cost, ensuring there is something to suit every preference and budget.
Viewing the Deceased
  • Families can choose to visit their loved one in our private Chapel of Rest. This can be an important part of the grieving process for many, offering a chance to say a final goodbye. We ensure your loved one is presented with dignity and peace.
Transportation
  • Arrangement of the hearse to transport the deceased.
  • Provision of limousines for family members if desired.
  • Discussion of any special transport requests.
Order of Service
  • Assistance with creating a meaningful Order of Service booklet, including choices of music (hymns, classical, contemporary), readings (poems, scriptures), eulogies, and visual tributes (photo slideshows).
Floral Tributes
  • Advice on floral arrangements, from family flowers to requests for donations to a chosen charity in lieu of flowers. We can coordinate with florists on your behalf.
Obituaries and Announcements
  • Guidance on writing and placing obituaries in local or national newspapers, as well as online announcements to inform friends and wider family of the funeral details.
Personal Touches
  • Ridgeway Funeral Service encourages families to personalise the funeral to truly reflect the unique life of the deceased. This could involve special colours, themed elements, significant items placed in the coffin, or unique modes of transport.
